Jose received his PhD in 1989 from the University of Zaragoza. After obtaining a teaching position at the Engineering School, Jose joined the group of high temperature superconductivity where he started laser ceramic processing, obtaining superconducting bars of very high critical current. He followed a postdoctoral stay at the German Aerospace Agency in 1995 for the development of monocrystalline fibers of high melting point, with interest as laser materials, and oriented his activity towards the study of eutectic oxides for structural and functional applications. In this line he has lead several projects of the National Programmes and two PROFIT projects for cutting composite material for the aeronautical industry.
Then his interest was directed toward the application of laser technologies for the marking and machining of all kinds of materials, strengthening the highly applied orientation of his research. He has leaded numerous research contracts with companies such as INTA, Saint Gobain, CARRD, Rauschert and BSH. As a result of the collaboration with BSH, Jose has supervised application oriented PhDs and contributed and advised to the establishment in the BSH plant in Zaragoza a R&D laboratory oriented to the study of materials for the household appliances sector. This laboratory has been endowed with an abundant infrastructure, staff, and numerous hired and trainee people. Together, they have completed a FP7 European project and collaborated in an MSCA-ITN-ETN action on the development of laser technologies for micro/nanostructuring.
Other lines of applied research in which Jose I. Peña participates are in the field of energy, specifically for the manufacture and characterization of fuel cells and of thermally activated selective emitters. His interests are to continue with the study of new materials and devices for power generation, the search for new industrial applications of laser and laser processing of bioceramics.
